About the project
Studio Four Architects Ltd were instructed to provide tender and construction drawings to enable Kier to build the new Birth Centre at Ashurst Hospital through the Procure 21 contract.
The building comprised a redundant care and treatment centre which had been constructed using a 1960’s systembuilding method comprising pre-cast reinforced concrete columns, lattice steel roof beams and infill panels, not dissimilar to the “Clasp”system. The building had been much modified by having a first floor and pitched roof added, but this was supported by an independent steel frame and simply sat over the original building. The ground floor had been extended in traditional construction during the 1980’s.
Approximately 540 square metres, or 50%of the existing ground floor, was allocated for the Birth Centre, the remaining area to be developed at a later date. The first floor remained operational during the construction period.
