Studio Four has been discussing its designs for the Corn Exchange project in Swindon with the Creating Excellence SW Design Review Panel, and is now reviewing the proposals following the latest workshop.
The current scheme for this landmark site in the Old Town, centred around the grade II listed former Corn Exchange and Butter Market, comprises 124 flats, 4 restaurants and 11 retail units.
Facing onto The Square, the Corn Exchange has had many past incarnations as Town Hall, Butter Market, Wine and Spirit wholesale warehouse, “Locarno” Ballroom, Ice Rink, Cinema and Bingo Hall. Now vacant for some 30 years, fires have destroyed the majority of the interior, but the external walls are still standing and these will be incorporated into the new proposals.
The project aims to rejuvenate this lesser-known historic heart of Swindon and breathe new life into the surrounding historic streets. It is hoped to progress to a Full Planning application before the end of the year.
